We are looking for volunteers to help lead tours at the historic Marshall House and Providence Academy as a Tour Docent/Tour Guide.
Position: Tour Docent (Tour Guide)
Reports To: Development and Outreach Coordinator
Works With: Other volunteers, General Public, Historic Trust Staff
This role provides the opportunity for the public to view the Marshall House and Providence Academy at no charge. Docents are available on a weekly basis to provide free, guided tours to community members and guests. Additionally, this role fulfills the mission of The Historic Trust by providing education about our local history. Currently, tours are open Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays from 10am-2pm, and on select Friday nights and Saturday afternoons.
Primary Responsibilities: Perform opening procedures at the start of the shift; maintain a clean and organized environment; lead tours; collect and log tour data; provide general customer service for the organization; perform closing procedures at the end of the shift.
Skills/Qualifications Needed: Interest in or love of history; ability to memorize a script; comfortable with public speaking in front of individuals or groups; reliable transportation; ability to work with a team; strong communication skills; generally courteous and pleasant demeanor.
Time Commitment: This is an ongoing position that typically requires one 4-hour shift per week. While in training, it will take a few shifts to memorize the material and be ready to give tours without aid or supervision from other volunteers.
During the week, shifts are scheduled from 10am-2pm. Friday night shifts are 5pm-7pm, and Saturday afternoon shifts are 11am-3pm.
