DESCRIPTION:From the use of pillories and stocks in colonial America to the rise of “cancel culture\,” use of shame as a weapon has a long history in the United States. And it has been used to mixed effect in the political arena when used to target politicians and their supporters.    \nProfessor Carolyn Long examines the rise of shamelessness in American politics and the use of shame against those with whom we disagree. When shame is used to demonize others\, does it contribute to political polarization? Are shame and shamelessness equally destructive to our politics and society? DESCRIPTION:Have you seen the large brick building situated right next to the freeway as you were driving through downtown Vancouver on I-5\, and wondered what’s inside? \nThe Historic Trust is pleased to offer you the opportunity to see for yourself! \nThe Secret Spaces Post Hospital Tour will give participants a chance to step back in time and imagine the rooms of this historic building in action. Built in 1903-1904\, the Post Hospital was considered cutting-edge for its time\, including being one of the first in the nation to have space purpose-built for taking and developing x-ray images. \nToday\, many of the building’s original structural features remain: \n\nTin ceiling tiles\nCoved ceilings\nWoodwork\nSun porches to support recovery of tuberculosis patients\n\nWith access to explore spaces on all four floors\, you’ll get an exclusive peek inside this structure that has been off-limits to the public for decades. \nYour 1.5-hour experience begins across the street from the Post Hospital at the Red Cross Building with a brief 10 to 15 minute seated educational session. The Historic Trust’s Director of Historic Preservation\, Holly Chamberlain\, will provide historical and architectural background information about changes the building has seen over time\, and about the spaces you’ll get to explore. Your time in the hospital will not be guided. Most spaces will be open for you to walk through or look into\, so you can see the building at your own pace within the allotted time frame. \nTwo tour times will be offered: \n9:30 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. \n11:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. \nTickets are $35 per person (price includes any applicable taxes and fees) and are only available for purchase in advance while supplies last. \nIMPORTANT – PLEASE NOTE: The Post Hospital is only accessible by stairs\, and movement between floors inside the building is via stairs only. DESCRIPTION:**This event is sold out! No waiting list and no standby ticket sales at door \nMusician\, historian\, and storyteller Joel Underwood returns to Vancouver for a very special two-act performance (with intermission) about the life and music of folksinger and activist Woodie Guthrie. \nGuthrie composed 26 songs in 30 days while riding along the Columbia River and touring the Grand Coulee Dam Project in 1941. With his unique\, authentic voice\, he chronicled both the grandeur and the perils of what he called “The Greatest Thing That Man Has Ever Done” as an employee of the Bonneville Power Administration. His time here in the Pacific Northwest inspired a swell of patriotism that led Guthrie to enlist in the U.S. Merchant Marine in World War II\, after which he returned home to fame and notoriety\, but also to tragedy and tremendous personal loss. \nThis interactive musical history performance will have you singing along to “Roll on Columbia\,” “Pastures of Plenty\,” and of course\, “This Land is Your Land\,” and learning the—sometimes hilarious\, sometimes tragic—stories behind the songs. \nTickets are $18 in advance and include any applicable taxes and fees. Space is limited and tickets may sell out prior to the event. But smartly\, Paul Hayden Kirk blended the clean look of modernism with our region’s tradition of building with wood\, and crisp lines with Japanese and Native American influences. This talk explores Kirk’s life\, along with examples of his work\, to paint a portrait of a true Northwest innovator. \nSpeaker Dale Kutzera is the author of Paul Hayden Kirk and the Rise of Northwest Modern\, the first monograph on the father of mid-century design in the Pacific Northwest. SUMMARY:General Thomas Anderson at Vancouver Barracks
DESCRIPTION:Register today and join us for an engaging presentation on one of Vancouver Barracks’ most influential commanders! \nOhio native and Civil War veteran General Thomas M. Anderson (1836-1917) commanded the 14th Infantry at Vancouver Barracks from 1886-1898. As one of the longer-serving commanders\, he\, and also his family\, became active in the community as well as at the post. Presenter Jeff Davis (Major\, U.S. Army\, Ret.) will talk about Anderson’s service in the context of the larger history of Vancouver Barracks. Anderson’s family had long-time association with this area as he was a grand-nephew of William Clark of the Corps of Discovery\, and his namesake son also served at Vancouver Barracks. The desk Anderson used while serving in Vancouver was donated to the Clark County Historical Museum and is on display at the Howard House. \nOur speaker\, Jeff Davis\, is an archaeologist and was active with the Vancouver Barracks Military Association for many years. A native of Vancouver where his Army father was based\, Davis joined the Army Reserve out of high school and served for many years around the world\, and also at Vancouver Barracks. He has authored and contributed to many books and other publications on military and Northwest history and is a frequent public speaker and tour guide. \nThis program is offered free of charge\, but space is limited. DESCRIPTION:The Historic Trust is excited to bring back Secret Spaces Tours for Preservation Month 2026!\nSecret Spaces Tour will give participants a unique peek into typically unseen parts of three Officers Row homes: the Marshall House\, Grant House\, and O. O. Howard House. \nYour tour stop at each house begins at the top of the hour with a 10-to-15-minute seated educational session\, providing historical and architectural background information about the spaces you are about to see. Highlights in each location include: \nMarshall House \n\nThe Historic Trust’s Director of Historic Preservation\, Holly Chamberlain\, will provide the historical and architectural overview\nAccess the turret via the attic for a beautiful view and photo opportunity\nVisit private offices on the second floor\n\nGrant House \n\nLocal historian Jeff Davis will be in character as President Ulysses S. Grant circa 1879 with a living history presentation about Grant’s life and time at Vancouver Barracks\, and points of interest about the house\nEnjoy the view and get a special close-up look at the exterior portion of this log cabin from the 2nd floor balcony\nBrowse the entire 2nd floor including the large over-kitchen banquet room\n\nO. O. SUMMARY:Mid-Century Modern Vancouver
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an exploration of the architecture and history of mid-twentieth century Vancouver with State Architectural Historian Michael Houser. Learn about mid-century modern architectural styles\, and the builders and designers who brought them to life. Houser will highlight several notable local designers including Day W. Hilborn\, Donald Stewart\, Keith Bradbury\, and William D. Cassady. \nHouser has served as the Architectural Historian for the State of Washington for more than 20 years\, and has a long record of helping building owners and the general public understand and connect with the architecture and history of their communities. Currently he manages the State and National Register programs at the Department of Archaeology and Historic Preservation in Olympia\, as well as Washington’s unique Heritage Barn Program. \nHouser helped heighten public awareness of post-WWII resources by establishing the “Nifty-from-the-Last 50 Initiative\,” which has documented over 300 mid-century modern buildings across the state and continues to grow. Recent projects include writing biographies of architects and building designers who practiced around the state\, and a study of the late 1950s nationwide Gold Medallion Home program\, which promoted the use of residential electricity. \nVancouver native Houser holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Idaho and a Master of Science Degree in Historic Preservation from Eastern Michigan University.  Previous jobs included working as the Historic Preservation Planner for Deschutes County\, OR. Earlier experience includes time at the Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn\, MI and survey work for the Historic Landmarks Foundation of Indiana. \n  \nRegistration is now open! \nThis program is offered free of charge\, but space is limited.
