Before his untimely death in an Iowa plane crash at the age of 22\, he and his band The Crickets created a series of pop music masterpieces and the template for what a rock band looks and sounds like\, influencing later artists such as Bob Dylan\, Elton John\, and The Beatles. In an evening that combines humor\, toe-tapping\, and tears\, musician and historian Joel Underwood returns to Vancouver to tell the story of Holly’s humble beginnings\, two years as a rock icon\, and sudden\, tragic death in 1959. Who was “Peggy Sue”? What movie inspired “That’ll Be The Day”? It’s an evening at the theater that leaves audiences saying\, “Oh Boy”![/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_separator border_width=”3″][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text margin_bottom=”0″ css=”.vc_custom_1789493855736{margin-bottom: 0px !important;}”]\nTicket Information:\nTickets are $18 each and must be purchased in advance. SUMMARY:Permanent Ink: Why We Still Love Print in the Digital Age
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]We once depended on handwriting for recording information. Then the printing press changed everything. We could record\, store\, and access information in thousands of copies. Five hundred years later\, the digital revolution is transforming things again. Today\, we get information from millions of websites in milliseconds with search engines and AI. \nTechnology has always shaped the way we’ve stayed informed\, expressed ourselves\, and stayed connected as communities. What lessons do earlier technologies\, like print\, hold for us today in the age of AI and digital overload? And why\, despite the speed and convenience of newer technologies\, is print more popular than ever? \nAt the end of the talk\, audiences will get the chance to try printing on a portable press.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Geoffrey Turnovsky is professor of French at the University of Washington. His teaching and research focus on the cultural history of early modern France and Europe\, and the history of print\, books\, authorship\, and reading. He is the author of Reading Typographically: Immersed in Print in Early Modern France. \nGeoffrey lives in Seattle.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_separator color=”turquoise” border_width=”2″][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text margin_bottom=”0″ css=”.vc_custom_1788192089247{margin-bottom: 0px !important;}”]Reservations are not yet open for this event.
